UNIDO, with funding from the Government of Japan, has handed over a pilot plastic waste collection centre in Jabi, delivered in collaboration with AEPB and expected to collect up to 1,200 tonnes of plastic waste a year.
On 26 March 2026, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), with funding support from the Government of Japan, established and handed over a Pilot Plastic Waste Collection Centre in Jabi, Abuja.
The centre was delivered in collaboration with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), which owns the facility, and is operated by Chanja Datti Company Limited. It is expected to collect up to 1,200 tonnes of plastic waste every year.
The facility forms part of UNIDO’s project “Promoting Sustainable Plastic Value Chains through Circular Economy Practices”, which aims to improve the collection, sorting and aggregation of plastic waste, strengthen recycling value chains and support livelihoods.
The commissioning included a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by the Honourable Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal; the Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria, Hideo Suzuki; representatives of UNIDO; officials of AEPB; and other stakeholders.
Residents and businesses in the FCT are encouraged to separate plastic waste and support recycling efforts across the Territory.
